History

The Anglican Church was established in Burundi in 1935 by Anglican missionaries and a team of evangelists from Uganda and Rwanda and during its implementation, the Church was known as the Church Missionary Society (C.M.S.) before becoming the Anglican Church of Rwanda-Urundi (EARU) which was part of the Province of the Church of Uganda.

The first burundian bishop has been consecrated in 1965, the Right Reverend John Nkunzumwami, who became bishop of the first and only Anglican Diocese of Burundi. His main residence was in Buye at Ngozi and the Anglican Church of Burundi got its own constitution and was part of the Province of Rwanda, Burundi and Boga-Zaire.

The Diocese of Bujumbura, the second diocese of the Anglican Church of Burundi which became the mother diocese of the Diocese of Rumonge emerged in December 1975 and was entrusted to the Bishop Samuel Sindamuka. Bishop Samuel presided over the first diocesan synod in January 1976, which adopted the Constitution of the Diocese of Bujumbura.

The Diocese of Bujumbura on its turn begat the fourth Anglican Diocese of the country, the Diocese of Matana, on 26 August 1990, which was entrusted to the Right Reverend Pie Ntukamazina.

In the same year in November the respective diocesan synods of Matana and Bujumbura approved consecutively swapping their bishops;

The boundaries of the Anglican Diocese of Bujumbura remained as agreed by these last synods;

Having regard to the letter of June 16, 2010, addressed to the Archbishop of the Anglican Church of Burundi, the Most Rev. Bernard NTAHOTURI, written by Bishop Pie Ntukamazina, whose purpose was to present the wish of the Diocesan Synod of Bujumbura to create two dioceses: Rumonge and Muramvya;

Referring on the recommendations of a provincial commission created by the House of Bishops, of March 7, 2011, to study the feasibility of the application of the Diocese of Bujumbura;

Referring to the recommendations of the House of Bishops of the Anglican Church of Burundi to create the Diocese of Rumonge;

Considering the decisions of the Provincial Synod of April 23, 2013, acting on the creation of the Diocese of Rumonge;

On the 4th August, 2013 has been created the seventh Diocese of the Anglican Church of Burundi, the Diocese of Rumonge, entrusted to the Right Reverend Pedaculi Birakengana, its first bishop.

This has been valued by the decisions of the Synod of the Diocese of Rumonge August 5, 2013, acting on the existence of the said Diocese, in the guidance of the Constitution of the Province of the Anglican Church of Burundi adopted on the 15th December 2005.

In the session of the Synod of the Diocese of Rumonge chaired by its first bishop adopted the Constitution of the Diocese which has been acted by the ministerial decree number 530/294/CAB/2014 of the 27th February 2014.
